Local Artists Create Painted Shovels for Greater Middlesex & Morris Habitat for Humanity Groundbreakings
NEW PROVIDENCE, NJ – When a group of talented local artists comes together for a great cause like Habitat for Humanity, the result is something truly special. On Tuesday, September 17, eight artists gathered to paint shovels for the Greater Middlesex & Morris Habitat for Humanity, infusing creativity into tools that will be used during ceremonial groundbreakings for new homes.
The artists—Kelly Bleach, Joyce Luzzi, Sarah Murray, Marta Kuttner, Alice Levin, Denise Moser, Susan Dackow, and Carol Lenderdson—dedicated the day to creating these one-of-a-kind pieces that will symbolize new beginnings for families in need.
Dawn Sherman, Special Event Coordinator for Greater Middlesex & Morris Habitat for Humanity and a resident of New Providence, initially approached the retired art teachers with the idea of creating custom designs for shovels and hammers to be used during ceremonial groundbreakings for new homes. Eager to support the cause once again, the artists were thrilled to lend their creative talents to this meaningful project.
The group of artists painted a total of 12 shovels, spending the day outdoors, blending their artistic talents with a shared sense of community. Their work will not only bring joy to new homeowners but also raise awareness for Habitat for Humanity’s mission. “We’re excited to do more projects like this,” said Moser. “After seeing how the shovels are used in the ceremonies, we’ll find out if Habitat will need more. It was such a rewarding experience to contribute to a cause that truly makes a difference.”
Habitat for Humanity’s mission is to eliminate homelessness and combat poverty by providing safe and affordable housing to those in need. Their goal is to unite people to “build homes, communities, and hope.”
