Massiel Mendez is a data entry operator for the city of Passaic. She has two daughters aged 15 and 12 years and a 5-year-old son.
An affordable 30-year fixed-rate mortgage will be provided Morris Habitat for Humanity. The home will have a 30-year deed restriction that allows modest equity upon resale, but mandates that it be sold at an affordable price to another income-eligible family. The prospective homeowner will contribute a minimum of 300 hours of sweat equity.
Morris Habitat for Humanity, in partnership with Paterson Habitat for Humanity, will be rehabilitating a two-story home with three bedrooms and one-and-a-half bathrooms. The home will be equipped with EPA WaterSense fixtures and other energy-efficient systems.
Bethel A.M.E. Church is selling the home to Morris Habitat at a significantly discounted price due to the renovation costs. The City of Passaic has awarded Morris Habitat a HOME Investment Partnerships Program (HOME) grant in the amount of $60,000 for the project.
Renovation work began on the home in July 2018. A new roof in August was followed by new siding and windows and interior demolition. The front porch was completed in October, and sheetrock was installed in November. A dedication ceremony was held in December.
