Volunteer Spotlight
Written by Suzanne Hartman | April 2006

Our faithful friend and partner, Charlie Hamilton, died April 11, 2006 following a brief illness.
Charlie’s love for Habitat showed through his support of our local events and even extended internationally as he volunteered to make a difference in our fight to eliminate substandard housing by helping build homes. Mr. Hamilton worked on Habitat projects in California, Mississippi and Georgia, as well as international projects in Mexico, South Korea, the Philippines and South Africa.
Charlie was a volunteer with Morris Habitat for many, many years. Recently his enthusiasm and knowledge of the streets were immeasurable when he helped to set up the rest areas for our Annual Historic Morris Bike & Hike. After working all morning to set up, he headed off to church, his other passion, to help with one of their events.
At our Annual Meeting and Volunteer Recognition last year, Charlie stood up and spoke eloquently about putting your passions into action both locally and internationally, touching many hearts in that room.
Charlie wasn’t always “working” with Habitat; he also joined us for our Anniversary House Gala where he shared stories throughout the evening with our homeowners. He even shared a dance and a memory about how his relative had written the words for the song and how much it meant to him.
Charlie’s passion for family, history, politics and of course Habitat will be remembered for years to come. Staff, homeowners, and volunteers of Morris Habitat will all miss you, Charlie!
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the First Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box 218, New Vernon, NJ 07976, for a special project with Habitat for Humanity dedicated to Charlie’s memory.
