We joined join forces with the Morris County Housing Authority (MCHA) for another collaborative effort on Salmon Road in the Landing area of Roxbury Township. The renovation of the four-bedroom home will provide affordable housing for a family and allow them to move off rental assistance.
MCHA used governmental grants to purchase the property as a HUD foreclosure in December 2007. Morris Habitat supplied volunteer labor and donations of services, materials and funding to do the rehab work on our 34th local project. After MCHA sells the home to a family chosen from their list of qualified applicants, Morris Habitat will hold the zero-interest mortgage and continue to partner with the family as they transition from renting into homeownership.
Site supervisor Bob Ball, new homeowners Luis Codoceo and Stella Sullivan, and assorted volunteers worked for an intensive two months to complete this project. Extensive damage caused by frozen water pipes was repaired by Bill Hearn Plumbing and Heating. Work groups came from the United Pentecostal Latin American Church of Dover and the Drew University Habitat Chapter.
The Roxbury Fire Department donated smoke detectors and fire extinguishers. Other in-kind donors included County College of Morris Landscape & Horticultural Technology Department (landscaping), Dow Chemical Company (rigid insulation), Gardens of the World, Mine Hill (landscaping), Hunter Douglas (blinds), Larson Doors, Mr. John (portable johns), Square D (electrical panels and breakers), Valspar Corp. (paint), Whirlpool Corp. (refrigerator and range), and Yale (doorknobs, locks).
At the dedication ceremony in April 2008, supporters launched Luis and Stella and their two children into a new cycle of promise and progress.
