Pershing Avenue
Jefferson

This is our second of three projects with the Morris County Housing Authority, which purchased the Pershing Avenue home through a foreclosure. At the groundbreaking ceremony, Jefferson mayor Russ Felter welcomed the Roman-Ortiz family to the first Morris Habitat project in Jefferson Township and pledged cooperation in finding additional properties for affordable housing.
Morris Habitat volunteers will rehab the three-bedroom home with the partner family as well as hold the 0% mortgage upon sale to the family.
Rehab work of clean-up, painting, and general repair was started in January 2006. “Everyone at Morris Habitat has been wonderful to us, teaching us all there is to know about owning a house,” said new homeowners Miriam and Orlando Roman-Ortiz. “The technical people working on the house are amazing,” they added. Orlando was particularly impressed with the electrician “ with two first names,” Bob Kelly, who has worked at the Twin Towers and New York’s Port Authority. The proud soon-to-be homeowner smiled and said, “For these guys with such vast experience, my house is a toy. For them the work on my house is like building a bird house.” The Roman-Ortiz’s shared what their two children are most looking forward to: space, in both the yard and the many rooms in the house.
The dedication celebration for our 28th completed Morris County home was held on Thursday, June 15. Landscaping with beautiful flowers and bushes was contributed by the Riverview School Girl Scout Troup 2093. In July 2006, the Roman-Ortiz family closed on the mortgage and moved in to start enjoying all their new spaces.
