Green Build

The Brooklyn Road property

A new four-plex residential dwelling will be constructed on the corner of Brooklyn Road and Lloyd Avenue in Stanhope. Morris Habitat and the Sussex County Habitat affiliate will collaborate to furnish labor, materials, equipment, and services on this second joint project. The Mayor and Council of the Borough of Stanhope are extremely supportive and ready to work with us to help provide their affordable housing obligation.

After hearing presentations from three different non-profit groups, the Stanhope Council chose to donate this lot to the Morris and Sussex Habitat affiliates. Our successful site plan and architectural proposal was prepared by architect Jeff Rawding of F J Rawding Architects Inc., Fred Stewart of Stewart Surveying & Engineering and Rich Smith of Richard Smith Surveyor. Thanks to Federal Home Loan Bank of New York, Lakeland Bank, sanofi-aventis, the John and Margaret Post Foundation, the Steven and Beverly Rubenstein Charitable Foundation, Bank of America and TD Bank for joining us as the House Sponsors for this project.

This Green Build project will be ENERGY STAR certified for energy efficiency. It will also include green building techniques for smart water use such as low-maintenance native landscaping and storm water chambers to capture runoff and recharge ground water. We will use certified lumber and recycle waste from the site as we try to get the building certified by the LEED for Homes rating system as a green home.

Homeowners for the two 2-bedroom condos were selected by lottery on February 28, 2009. Kelly Hemner works with autistic adults and has two sons: a 7-year-old and a 3-year-old. Fabiola Chavez Libreros is a solderer and assembler who has one 13-year-old son. As single mothers, they had thought it was financially impossible to own a home. They are thankful that their boys will have stability, security, and a yard to play in. Kerri Vos will purchase a 1-bedroom condo. She works with infants at a daycare center.

The groundbreaking ceremony was held in March 2009. We thank Our Savior Lutheran Church for providing parking spaces for workers and PMZ Landscaping for the use of water and utilities during construction. After Seneca Tree Service removed trees from the lot, work progressed rapidly. Framing was completed by mid-summer. Join us for the dedication ceremony at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, April 25.
