Mount Olive

Contest Winner Sponsored by Mary Kay Inc.

rendering of Hatakawana Terrace home

A new single-family home will soon be built in the Budd Lake section of Mount Olive Township. The home will have 3 bedrooms, 1 bathroom, and a semi-finished basement. Our 62nd project will be ENERGY STAR certified for energy efficiency. Selling price will be $134,000 with a zero-interest 30-year fixed mortgage. The home will have a 30-year deed restriction that allows modest equity upon resale, but mandates that it be sold to another qualifying low-income family.

Hatakawana Terrace wall raising

Phyllis Doyle, a local independent beauty consultant, won sponsorship of this home by Mary Kay Inc. in a “Get Beautiful. Give Back.” contest. In April, May and June of 2011, friends of Morris Habitat lent their faces for free marathon makeovers of twenty women at a time. Over 14,000 women participated in the contest nationally, and Phyllis completed the greatest number of makeovers. Since 2006, ten Habitat for Humanity homes across the United States have been sponsored and built by employees and members of the Mary Kay independent sales force. Whether it’s building confidence with a fresh new look or building better communities, together beautiful things can happen.

Mount Olive Township donated $50,000 from its Affordable Housing Trust Fund toward the purchase of the building lot. Pro bono professional services have been contributed by attorney James P. Mullen, Esq., architect Marjorie B. Roller and engineer Fred Stewart.

The Savenkova family was selected to be the homeowners by a lottery held in February 2012. Yuliya is originally from Russia. She has a 9-year-old son, and her mother, Yevgeniya, will also be living with them. Yuliya is a food service representative and her mother works as a nanny. They currently reside in a small two-bedroom apartment with leaky windows. Her mother usually sleeps on the couch, but in the winter they must share a bedroom because it is too cold in the living room. Yuliya’s son is very excited to be getting a basement where he can play.

Foundation work began in March. In April, contest winner Phyllis Doyle, officials from Mary Kay corporate headquarters in Texas and representatives of Habitat for Humanity International joined us to frame and raise the first wall. The home should be ready to welcome its new owners in December 2012.
