Partner homeowner Debra Williams is happily anticipating a lower heating bill in her well-insulated new home with its “awesome” heating system. The location is safe for her two pre-teenaged boys, and neighbors are clearly friendly and welcoming.
This new home is a dream come true for Debra. She had participated in the Housing Partnership’s “Step by Step to Homeownership” program in 2001, but was uncertain of her ability to accomplish her goal. Seeing her and her boys’ names in print in 2003 as candidates for a home lottery awakened her hope and led to this reality. It has had a great impact on her life by opening other doors. She now plans to go back to school and become certified as a counselor, with a specific interest in substance abuse counseling. Debra is so grateful for this opportunity for a new life that she plans to become a Habitat volunteer and so help others to benefit as she has.
Renovations were started in March 2006. The three-bedroom single-family home now has new hardwood floors, cabinets, appliances and carpets. The family moved into the home in December, and the dedication ceremony for our 32nd completed home was held on January 26, 2007.
Special thanks are due to Roberta Strater, executive director, and the board of directors of the Morris County Housing Authority for this third collaboration with Morris Habitat. They purchased the property while MHfH handled the general contracting and will hold the mortgage to help keep the home affordable.
