Collins Avenue
Jefferson

The construction of a single-family home located on the corner of Route 181 and Collins Avenue in the Lake Hopatcong section of Jefferson Township is the result of a longstanding municipal partnership. The township provided the land, excavation assistance, foundation stone, and topsoil. This home on the site of the old Hurdtown School is our third in Jefferson and our 39th completed project.
Helar and Ada Lanchipa were selected as the homeowners in November 2006.
The Presbyterian Church of Chatham Township sponsored half of the house, and church members volunteered on work crews. Partial funding came from a Community Development HOME grant and a HUD SHOP grant . Automatic Data Processing, Inc. (ADP) and its associates sponsored a room, and ADP employees volunteered on several Morris Habitat building projects through Habitat for Humanity’s Corporate Challenge. Wells Fargo provided additional funding. Many local individuals and businesses contributed to the Collins Avenue project through the Hoedown for Humanity fundraiser held at Camp Jefferson in 2006. Thousands of dollars were saved by using construction materials originally purchased for five other building projects completed earlier in 2008.
Architect Glenn Stubaus supplied architectural drawings for the four-bedroom ranch-style home, and engineer Fred Stewart reviewed the construction plans. Trees were cleared, and the groundbreaking ceremony was held on September 16, 2007. After a delay due to a large rock shelf that impeded excavation, the foundation was poured in the spring of 2008, and the walls and roof were framed in May and June. Helar and Ada and their four children worked hard on completing their sweat equity and enjoyed being able to participate in all phases of the building. Sussex County Habitat for Humanity volunteers met the Lanchipa family when Helar helped at a project in the borough of Hopatcong, and they often worked on this home in Jefferson.
The house was dedicated on November 2, and the happy family celebrated Christmas 2008 in their new home.
