Brooklyn Mountain Road Collaborative Project
In February, the Chandler family donated their two-bedroom single-family home in Hopatcong to Sussex County Habitat for Humanity. In this first collaborative rehab project between the two affiliates, Morris Habitat helped with legal work and family selection. Sussex County Habitat helped with family selection, permitting, and ordering of building supplies. Both groups supplied volunteers.
Helen Njau and her 17-month-old daughter, Jasmine, won the May lottery to select a homeowner from the three qualified applicants. Everyone heard the shouts and tears of joy when Helen received the news.
Helen, originally from Kenya, works for a non-profit group, Partnerships for People. She wanted a Habitat house because her small apartment in Irvington has no play space for Jasmine. She will now be able to raise her daughter in the safety and security of a home with a backyard and friendly neighbors. Helen has been very active in the building of her new home. She has worked every Saturday alongside Habitat volunteers, even climbing on the roof to nail down shingles. Several of her new neighbors have also volunteered. Join us on Sunday, October 14, to celebrate the dedication of our 31st completed home!
